How to Beat Hard Mode

Update 1 Difficulty Picker

Update 1 (July 2026) lets you choose Medium or Hard when starting a run in Drain the Lake. Hard mode increases enemy aggression, tightens survival margins, and unlocks badges Overachiever (complete Hard) and Skill Issue (fail Hard). Read Update 1 breakdown before selecting Hard on your first attempt.

Hard vs Medium vs Default

Default remains the baseline launch experience. Medium adds moderate pressure — good practice before Hard. Hard stacks faster anglerfish and shark encounters in Mineshaft and below. Community YouTube guides recommend clearing Phone Ending on default before Hard pushes.

Hard Mode Loadout

1. Max relevant movement speed nodes
2. Equip best available bucket — Toxic or Ancient from tier list
3. Unlock Auto-collect for safe shallow farming between attempts
4. Claim UPD LOG Wheel Spins after Update 1

Survival Routing

Never swim blindly in deep water on Hard. Drain from shorelines with escape paths. Use F teleport (PC controls) to reset position after anglerfish lures. Full enemy details on Lake Enemies and Anglerfish guide.

For alternate ending hunters, Hard also raises risk on the Hidden Treasure route — consider Medium first.

Badge Goals on Hard

Completing Hard awards Overachiever. Dying or failing awards Skill Issue — both count toward Ancient Bucket's any-10-badge requirement on Badges page. Pair Hard attempts with checkpoint badges like Tourist (all six checkpoints in one run).
